This nine weeks in ELAR we will work on distinguishing between a narrative and expository piece of writing.
When writing a personal narrative, students will be working on: . Narrowing the focus of their story to one small idea . Including a beginning that captures the reader's attention. . Developing details . Adding strong adjectives and verbs . Editing and revising to improve our stories
When writing an expository piece, students will be working on: . Developing a strong beginning with a hook and thesis sentence. . Developing paragraphs with a strong main idea sentence and details to support the main idea. . Adding a conclusions that sums up the topic of their paper. . Editing and revising to improve their piece
In reading, we will be working on metacognitive strategies to improve comprehension such as: predicting, visualizing, making connections, questioning, and summarizing.
Strategies For Reading at Home While reading at home this week, make predictions as you read. Use things such as the title, back cover, illustrations, background knowledge, and unanswered questions to guide your predictions. It is important that you stop and clarify your predictions after each chapter.
